Peter F. Garrett, director of the Center for External Affairs at the National Cancer Institute, recently announced he is stepping down from his position. His last day at the NCI will be May 9. Subsequently, the NCI informed communications staffers that their positions were eliminated.
As director, Garrett oversaw the work of the Office of Advocacy Relations, the Office of Communications and Public Liaison, and the Office of Government and Congressional Relations. He has been a staunch supporter of PAMN’s efforts, serving as an integral partner for collaboration between the NCI and PAMN.
“Working for NCI for the past 11 years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, in large part because of the amazing mission which includes working hand-in-hand with the cancer community to fulfill the vision of the National Cancer Program,” Garrett said. “As cancer communicators, we’re in a unique position because of the critical cancer research and care networks that span the nation to the benefit of Americans and people everywhere. I’ve always believed that we have an awesome opportunity to make a huge difference in peoples’ lives.”
At this time, PAMN has not received word how cancer center communicators can connect with NCI. We will update our members when more information is available.
In the meantime, Garrett offered words of encouragement for PAMN members: “I appreciate you for not only communicating on behalf of your impressive institutions, but also for connecting with each other and the public. Working together, you do your communities and your country a great service.”
“Much like PAMN members working together, NCI is better when we work with our partners across the community,” Garrett said. “I thank you for what you do because cancer research (especially when communicated well!) saves lives.”
In turn, the PAMN organization would like to thank Peter and the rest of the NCI communications team for their contributions at the NCI and support for the work of our members across the country.
